How to Describe Physical Reality?*

چکیده

Because cosmology touches our ideas about what lies “beyond” as much as about what went “before”, it will always raise controversy and even cause bitterness. Although I am a classical astrophysicist, I reckon that even in the solar spectrum, some elements† indicate some general principle of the universe. At the same time, another universe than that of the astrophysicists is offered by mathematicians who conceive all sorts of objects and geometries. But there is too great a temptation to consider these constructions “real”, as soon as they are plausible. As a fellow astrophysicist, I see the universe in the same way as Professor Rees. His description of the modern progress of astronomy and cosmology cannot be more balanced, subtle and precise. I would certainly not try to contradict him on the facts, even though some astronomical observations such as “abnormal” redshifts cannot help

God in Sikhism

The fundamental belief in Sikhism is that God exists not merely as an idea or concept, but as a real entity. God is indescribable, yet knowable and perceivable to anyone who is prepared to dedicate the time and energy to become perceptive to His persona. The Gurus never spoke about proofs of the existence of God. For them, He is too real, and something obvious does not require any logical proof...

Collaboration with Tangible Augmented Reality Interfaces

We describe a design approach, Tangible Augmented Reality, for developing interfaces for supporting face-to-face collaboration. By combining Augmented Reality techniques with Tangible User Interface elements, we can create interfaces in which users can interact with spatial data as easy as real objects. Tangible AR interfaces remove the separation between the real and virtual worlds and so enha...

Crossing the Chasm

Traditional computer interfaces often create a separation between physical and digital spaces. This prevents people from working as easily in virtual worlds as they do in the real world, or from moving seamlessly between reality and virtual reality. In this paper we describe how this chasm can be crossed though the use of an interface metaphor, Tangible Augmented Reality, that combines elements...

Interactive Art Analysis Based on Baudrillard’s Hyper reality Theory, a Case Study of Digital Interactive installation

The contemporary philosopher Jean Baudrillard, one of the postmodernism theorists, considers representation in the contemporary world as a factor in the disappearance of reality. In his view, the main feature of new arts is not the expression of artistic beauty, but communication with the audience and expression of the artist’s ideas. In interactive art, the presence and role of the audience in...

A Conceptual Framework for Mixed Reality Environments: Designing Novel Learning Activities for Young Children

How do we conceptualise and design mixed reality environments (MREs)? Here we describe a first pass at a conceptual framework and use it to inform the design of different kinds of activities for children to experiment with. Our aim was to investigate how different MRE set-ups affected children’s exploratory behaviour and their understanding of them. The familiar activity of colour mixing was us...
